CLASSIFICATION OF LIVINGTHINGS

FUNGI

2.KINGDOM FUNGI

Fungi are plants which lack chlorophyll and live like parasite. They include, mould, yeast,
mildews mushrooms, toadstools, fuffballs, rusts, smuts and shelf fungi.

CHARACTERISTICS OFF UNGI

  • They are eukaryotic in nature.
  • They have heterotrophic nutrition as they lack chlorophyll, and they live as parasites or
  • saprophytes and digest food externally.
  • The vegetative body is known as a mycelium consisting of elongated cells known as hyphae.
  • Their cellwalls are made of chitin.
  • They store food inform of glycogen like animals.
  • They reproduce by means of spores and by budding in yeast especially.
  • They are terresterial in habitat
ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF FUNGI
Usefull fungi
  • Production of antibiotics like penicillin from penicillium notatum.
  • In industry yeast is used for brewing and baking and other fungi are used to flavor cheese.
  • Some of fungi are food for man e.g some muchrooms.
  • Saprophytic fungi are major decomposers in nature allowing recycling of matter.
  • In symbiotic union with algae to form lichens that are colonisers in terrestrial succession.
  • In symbiotic union with plants roots to form mycorrhiza, they increase the absorptive surface area of plants enabling it to take in more water and nutrients.
  • They are used in scientific research in genetics, cell biology and biochemistry.
Harmfulfungi
  • Parasitic fungi cause many diseases like blights, smuts and rusts in plants and candida, ringworm and athletees foot in man.
  • Causes poilage of food e.g Rhizopus which spoil bread.
  • Cause deterioration of natural materials e.g leather and wood by dry rot fungi.
